“Only doing one enlistment looks bad on your resume. Because it shows you can’t stick with something longterm.”
I mean, I get 8 years would look better than 4. But I doubt someone who’s hiring is gonna be like.
“You only did four years? And you weren’t even Airborne or Air Assault!? GTFO SHITBAG YOU DON’T DESERVE TO WORK HERE AT HOME DEPOT!”

Yea, I have 5 on my resume and get asked, then it brings up my medical issues which employers pass on.
Luckily I work for myself now, so no one can tell me “we’ve already found someone better suited for the job”.

Nothing at all wrong with pulling the cord after 4. After 20+ years in professional environments, my impression is former mitary are typically more squared away and tend to be a bit more focused, regardless of service time. As a hiring manager, all else being equal, I’m giving you a harder look.

I did 4 years in the Marine Corps, got out and used the Post 9/11 GI BILL to get a bachelors in Business. Employers just like that check in the box that you served, it really doesn’t matter the length. Besides the GI BILL pays for your school + they stipend you with E-5 pay +dependents. I know when I was going to school, I was pocketing 1800 a month that isn’t taxed and I could still work anywhere and make money on top of that. Being in Illinois, I also still have 4 years of free college paid for by the state on top of that should I ever decide to use those benefits. It was neat, because I also had 5 years of free healthcare from the V.A. when I got out, but that one was because I served in a combat theater. My brother on the other hand is on year 6 of his re-enlistment, he’s a lifer :).

I’m doing summer school right now on the GI bill, it’s awesome. I didn’t know they gave you BAH w/dependents so my first check was nice surprise.
I definitely made the right decision getting out when I did. I was artillery so it’s not like I was learning any technical skills that would translate to the civilian world lol.

I did 8 in the air force. 4 to fall in love with it, then 4 more to make me into a salty, hateful ball of misery. That “you’ll never survive on the outside!” shit really gets to your head and messes with you. I miss a lot about it, but I’m so glad I pulled chalks.

Oh yeah, if I could hire nothing but ex-military going forward, I’d be perfectly OK with that. We’ve only had one miss, all the other ones have been the best guys I have worked with

Employers seem to enjoy you serving solely for their tax write off and ability to say they hire veterans. That’s what it seems like at least.
